English as a Second Language, Interpretation and Translation

Service: Language Assessment and Referral

Location:
Peterborough or Cobourg office by appointment. Possibility of off-site services in other areas in catchment area (determined on a case-by-case basis).

Eligibility:
Refugee claimants, convention refugees, protected persons, persons approved in principle, permanent residents and naturalised Canadian citizens who are 18 years of age or older and who can provide proof of their current immigration status. Please note we cannot provide assessments to non-eligible individuals.

We provide English language assessments and referrals to free government funded English Training Programs in the region (both formal classes and home study). Language assessments are conducted by certified language assessors using standardized tools. Please note that a language assessment may take up to four hours.

We facilitate informal English conversation classes where clients can practice their English and make connections with others.

Service: Tutoring

Eligibility: Immigrants and refugees 18 years of age or older who are not visitor or study permit holders (with the exception for individuals who have submitted an in Canada family sponsorship). Priority is given to beginner and intermediate English level learners.

Location:
City of Peterborough, City of Cobourg

We match individuals with volunteer tutors for 1 hour weekly sessions for English language, driver’s licence test, citizenship test, and computer literacy tutoring for an initial period of 2 months; tutoring sessions may continue beyond the 2 months if both tutor and client agree.

Service: Interpretation

Eligibility:
Immigrants and refugees who need to access essential services (e.g. services essential to their quality of life) and who lack the language skills, resources and connections to do so. Priority is given to government assisted refugees in their first year of arrival.

City of Peterborough. Possibility of off-site services in other areas in catchment area (determined on a case-by-case basis).

Interpretation services are dependent on organisational capacity and may change at any time. Where capacity exists, we may provide the following:

  • Trained, non-certified staff interpretation
  • Connections to trained, non-certified volunteer interpreters
  • Connections to community members for informal support
  • Referral to for fee certified interpretation services
  • Referral to free certified interpretation services (for victims of abuse)

Service: Translation

Eligibility:
All immigrants, refugees, and community members assisting immigrants and refugees

We do not provide direct translation services, but we do provide:

  • Informal translation through Google Xerox
  • Referral to for fee certified translation services
