School, Family and Youth Support

Service: School Orientation and Registration

Eligibility:
Immigrants and refugees in secondary school or with school-aged children during first year of school

Location:
Schools within in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPR) and the Peterborough, Victoria Northumberland, and Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNC). SWIS can meet families at prearranged appointments at neighbourhood schools or our offices.

SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) is a joint program between the New Canadians Centre, KPR, and PVNC. Principals and school staff may refer families to SWIS at registration or at any time during the school year. Parents and students may also contact SWIS directly. SWIS offers the following:

  • Individual or group orientation to the education system in Canada to newcomer students or their families
  • Support for vulnerable individuals or families with school registration
  • Support for parents in understanding and adapting to the Canadian school system (e.g. school bus, school lunches, parent-teacher conferences)

Service: Youth Support

Eligibility:
Immigrants and refugees 14-24 years of age

Location:
Peterborough office; Cobourg office; Phone, Email, SKYPE; Possibility of off-site services in other areas in catchment area (determined on a case-by-case basis).

Staff provide mentorship and role modelling for youth, supporting vulnerable individuals, alone or in collaboration with partners, to:

  • Establish an education plan (e.g. PACE, Academic Upgrading, etc.)
  • Build employment capacity (applying for youth summer job program, promoting volunteer opportunities, etc.)
  • Support youth with other issues where they face barriers specific to the newcomer experience, where the outcome is essential, and where they lack both capacity and resources to do so independently or with the sole aid of a partner agency

Service: Parenting Support

Eligibility:
Immigrants and refugees who are newcomers (less than 5 years in Canada) and who have children under the age of 18, where there are barriers specific to the newcomer experience and they lack the capacity and resources to do so independently or with the sole aid of a partner agency

Location:
Peterborough office; Cobourg office; Phone, Email, SKYPE; Possibility of off-site services in other areas in catchment area (determined on a case-by-case basis).

We work with parents to:

  • Connect families with disruptions due to behavioural or parenting issues to appropriate services (e.g. CAS, Kinark, etc.)
  • Support vulnerable individuals with finding childcare
  • Support families to meet special needs of children

Service: Recreation Registration

Eligibility:
Immigrants and refugees who are newcomers (less than 5 years in Canada) and who have school-aged children

Location:
Peterborough Office, Cobourg Office

We facilitate group sessions to provide information and registration assistance for targeted summer camp and recreation opportunities.

Note:
No individual assistance filling in registration forms is available outside of group sessions.
