National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 All day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day – a time to honour and celebrate the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of this land.

We recognize their deep history, vibrant cultures, and immense contributions—while also acknowledging the impacts of colonization that continue today.

For newcomers and all Canadians, learning about Indigenous Peoples is essential to truly understanding this country. At the New Canadians Centre, we are committed to walking the path of Truth and Reconciliation with humility and action.

This month’s resource:

“Indigenous Canada” – Free Online Course by the University of Alberta

This 12-lesson course explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada from an Indigenous perspective. Topics include land and treaties, gender and sexuality, legal systems, and reconciliation.

Enroll for free here: https://www.coursera.org/learn/indigenous-canada

Whether you are new to this learning or continuing your journey, this is a great way to deepen your understanding and reflect on the experiences and resilience of Indigenous Peoples.

Let’s take the time to learn, reflect, and honour the stories that shape the land we now call home.
