Canadian Multiculturalism Day 2021
June 27 is Canadian Multiculturalism Day. It is a day to celebrate the contributions of the diverse cultures that make up our home in Nogojiwanong-Peterborough on Turtle Island, Canada. The day was first commemorated in 2003.
Nogojiwanong-Peterborough is in Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations, which include: Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations. We celebrate the heritage of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and commit to sharing Indigenous history, languages and culture with newcomers and refugees as important steps towards education and reconciliation.
In 2020-21, during an unprecedented year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the New Canadians Centre supported over 1000 clients from 96 different countries, speaking a total of 58 different languages. They each bring with them unique music, dance, food, sports, and stories that together paint a beautiful multicultural mosaic of Canada.
Together, we celebrate multiculturalism and the important role it plays in building a diverse, strong, and vibrant society. Please enjoy these performances, stories, film, and recipes that together tell the story of a multicultural Canada.

Stories from Our Community: Radio-Podcast Project
There's a story within each of us. The Newcomer Radio Group was created in February 2021 to help newcomers unearth their stories and share them on their own terms.
The New Canadians Centre & Trent Radio partnership, funded by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, has provided training on storytelling and audio/radio production to 10 newcomers. Each participant was outfitted with audio gear including a professional recorder and headphones to help bring their stories to life.
Join us on June 27 for a live broadcast of these stories on Trent Radio CFFF 92.7FM at 12:00 PM and then rebroadcasted at 4:30 PM.
Following the noon broadcast, the stories will be made available on this page as podcasts.
Film Screening: "We are the Radical Monarchs"
In partnership with ReFrame Film Festival, we bring you a free screening of the "We are the Radical Monarchs" film.
The film introduces you to the Radical Monarchs - an alternative to the Scout movement for girls of colour, aged 8-13 - and touches on important themes of representation, allyship, equity, and youth leadership.
Available for free streaming for one week from June 27 to July 4.

Aromas, flavours, ingredients, who we cook for and how we share our recipes — they all tell stories that shape us as a community. Throughout June, we're partnering with KawarthaNow.com to share four stories of immigration and integration through food and recipes.
Join us on this journey through pantries and kitchens each Tuesday in June. We hope that you will fill both your plate and your heart.
