Support Services

Our Support Services include:

Interpretation & Translation

Are you an organisation looking to support newcomers?

Providing your client with access to interpretation and translation services is a big step towards equity and inclusion. It reduces the barriers that people with limited English proficiency face in engaging in your programs and with your services.

Professional Interpretation and Translation

The New Canadians Centre works with professional agencies to provide certified interpretation and translation for our clients (e.g., MCIS Language Solutions, LanguageLine Solutions, CEOTIS - Central Eastern Ontario Translation and Interpretation Services).

These agencies can provide interpretation services through the phone, video call and in-person in a variety of languages.

Community Interpretation

We also maintain a list of local community interpreters and hire them to provide interpretation services from time to time. These community interpreters are vetted by staff but are not necessarily trained professionally or certified. They are paid an hourly rate and reimbursed for parking. Currently, we have community interpreters who speak Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Rohingya, Spanish and French. If you would like to recruit a community interpreter, please contact our Case Management Coordinator

Our staff are not available to provide interpretation services.

Where possible, please choose a professional interpreter when you are working with someone who is new to Canada and avoid asking family members, friends, children and youth to take on the role of interpretation. This article provides a good rationale for why this is not ideal.

We do not subsidise interpretation services for people who are new to Canada unless they are within their first year of arriving as a Government-Assisted Refugee.

Are you new to Canada and need interpretation to understand information in your language?

First, ask the business or organization for interpretation.

If they cannot provide interpretation, you can use Google Translate to communicate.
