Janet Honsberger believes the good work of the New Canadians Centre is evident in the fabric of our community – from our schools to community organisations. It is just one of the many reasons Janet has made a gift in her will to the New Canadians Centre.

When Janet Honsberger looks at the Old Millbrook School she sees more than a building she, along with many others helped to preserve. “It’s the people driving and supporting community initiatives that I’m most drawn to,” Janet says.

A retired faculty member from Fleming College who worked for more than 29 years in education, Janet says the project’s vision to save the building and restore it to the vibrant community centre it is today brought together a small group of volunteers who didn’t know a great deal about fundraising. “We were guided by a collective spirit to build something for our community that would have a far-reaching impact. Every little bake and lawn sale we had moved us forward to create something that was bigger than the group of people involved. It’s what kept us motivated and inspired to see the project through to fruition.”

Janet’s desire to work collaboratively to build and foster community aligns with her support of the New Canadians Centre. “I’ve always been impressed by the ingenuity of the staff and their commitment to providing compassionate care for the people they serve. It’s evident in everything they do. From the organisation’s response to challenges associated with the delivery of programs and services during this difficult time, to collaborative efforts with other agencies to provide a level of support that goes far beyond meeting the basic needs of newcomers,” Janet explains.

Janet believes the work of the New Canadians Centre has a ripple effect in our community.
