Living Library Plus: Looking for Change
September 27, 2023 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
We’re partnering with the Peterborough Public Library to deliver a program featuring personal storytelling and cultural food-sharing. NCC’s Living Library Plus aims to share human stories of immigration and integration by highlighting diverse and compelling stories of transition, settlement and belonging.
Participants will begin each event with a potluck featuring foods they’ve made from that month’s Spice Club Takeaway Kits. Attendees will have first dibs on the next month’s kits!
September: Looking for Change
Speaker: Mauricio Interiano | Country: Honduras | Spice: Achiote or Annatto
Mauricio was only 16 when he chose to leave Honduras looking for change, opportunities, and a better education. He arrived in Canada in 2010 to finish his schooling in Victoria, BC, and then moved to Peterborough two years later to attend Trent University. As a young student settling into a new country and then in a new province, Mauricio faced many challenges adapting to life away from family and home. In 2019, having established his life in Canada, Mauricio left to pursue a Master’s degree in Migration.
While he would learn much during his few years away, perhaps the most valuable lesson he would learn is that Peterborough and Canada were now also his home. In Looking for Change, Mauricio takes you on a journey of discovery, belonging, community, and endurance. Today, Mauricio proudly calls Peterborough home.
