Volunteer Spotlight – Sara Chokre
Meet Sara Chokre!
Volunteer Role/Position(s): Social Group/Workshop Facilitator (Conversation Circles).
Volunteering Since: 2024.
Languages: French, English, Arabic & Spanish.
“My name is Sara, and I started volunteering with the New Canadians Centre in early 2024. Now, in 2025, I continue to volunteer as a translator, interpreter, and French teacher for an amazing intermediate/advanced class. I speak four languages – French as my native , English, Arabic and Spanish -because I’ve always loved languages and began interpreting when I was young.
I used to be an elementary school teacher in Toronto, and I’ve also worked in a federal government position and on many other inspiring projects. I’m currently studying medicine, and volunteering with NCC has been a truly rewarding experience.
I love meeting newcomers, learning from them, and helping them feel welcome in our community. For me, volunteering isn’t just about giving time – it’s about connection, kindness, and growing together. Outside of volunteering, I love reading (I read a lot!), collecting books, writing poems in French and English, and enjoying nature, lakes, and skating. Peterborough truly has it all!
When we share our time and words with others, we plant seeds of hope that grow in every heart we touch.”
Merci / Thanks / Gracias
