1st Annual Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year Award
The inaugural Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year award, sponsored by the Peterborough Community Futures Development Corporation, was presented. The goal of the Newcomer Entrepreneur of the Year award is to recognize the achievements of business leadership and community involvement made by newcomers within the Peterborough community. Sixty-five nominations were received and an independent panel selected the winner after narrowing it down to three finalists.
The winner of the award is Nic Cunningham of Success Consulting. He was born and raised in Wales and moved to Peterborough in 2005. His primary business is business development and recruitment within the engineering and manufacturing sectors. He is also a public speaker. He provides global businesses with insight into improving operational efficiencies. Nic gives generously to many organizations in Peterborough including the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign and sitting on the board of Kawartha Youth Unlimited.
The other finalists were Evangelina Rodriguez and Rosie Salcido-Schmidt of Faces by 2 and James Harley of Harley Farms.
Evangelina Rodriguez and Rosie Salcido-Schmidt formed Faces by 2, a makeup artistry company based in Peterborough, Ontario specializing in makeup, face-painting and body painting. Rosie and Evangelina come from Mexico and met at Fleming College while taking a Professional Make Up Course. After this course they came up with the concept of supplying make up services for weddings, formals, and parties in the Peterborough area.
Located in Keene, Harley Farms is family-run and produces livestock and crops with special attention to animal welfare and the natural environment they work in. Roger, Julie, James and Emily Harley moved to Canada in 2000 from the UK where they had farmed over 4500 acres all under natural farming protocols. In 2002, they purchased their present farm. Harley Farms is the only SPCA-certified farm in Ontario where free-range cattle, sheep and pigs graze naturally in the farm’s GMO-free environment.
As the winner, Nic received a Zimbabwean stone sculpture donated by Fran Fearnley of ZimArt Rice Lake Gallery and a package of prizes. Gala tickets for the finalists were kindly donated by the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, Laridae Communications and Peterborough Economic Development.
