Creating Welcoming Communities in Challenging Times: Standing Strong Through Education and Awareness

The world is an unsettled place right now.

In many countries, the political climate has shifted. Attitudes are hardening towards immigration and inclusion. Misinformation and disinformation fuel hate, propaganda and outrage. And there is division about the path forward.

We see this right here in our community. Yet, despite the negativity and anxiety, we remain hopeful and undaunted at the NCC, continuing to stand strong and empowering newcomers and immigrants to thrive and feel valued.

This is our vision and mission. And, make no mistake, it is our passion.

It is what we have been doing for the past 45 years, and the work has never been more vital or urgent.

Taking Action to Empower Our Newcomer Clients

Constantly changing immigration rules and decreased public support hit newcomers harder than anyone.

Moreover, our clients feel the cost-of-living spike, the housing crunch, and healthcare system strain as acutely as any of us. And, make no mistake, our entire team — Board, staff and volunteers — are leaning into these issues, with a clear message to newcomers: “You are not alone, and we’re so glad you are a part of our community”

As ever, we are here helping newcomers to improve their English, learn about their rights, gain new practical skills, find work, and perhaps most important of all — make new friends and discover all that our community has to offer.

Community Education & Training

We are working with local businesses, schools and organizations of all stripes to promote an inclusive community for ALL through workshops, videos, podcasts, speakers and pilot projects.

  • Our Community Training Program offers a range of interactive courses on anti-discrimination such as Understanding & Practicing Cultural Humility, and Building Empathy & Understanding Through Stories.
  • The Living Library showcases the immigrant experience through compelling stories of transition, settlement and belonging through speakers, videos, and podcasts.
  • Our Neighbourhood is a video series with newcomers delving into their journey, and sharing their experiences, struggles, and triumphs right in our neighbourhood.
  • The Workplace Inclusion Charter is an employer toolkit and Community of Practice to create more inclusive workplaces.

With your support, we can continue to bring people together by countering division and building bridges to better understanding and integration.

Will you consider standing with us and making a gift to help cultivate a respectful community for all members?

Thank you for being a part of our proud legacy of empowering people who are new to Canada and for your support of the New Canadians Centre.
