Living Library Plus: Feeling Canada in a Mexican Heart

October 25, 2023 @ 6:30 pm 8:00 pm

We’re partnering with the Peterborough Public Library to deliver a program featuring personal storytelling and cultural food-sharing. NCC’s Living Library Plus aims to share human stories of immigration and integration by highlighting diverse and compelling stories of transition, settlement and belonging.

Participants will begin each event with a potluck featuring foods they’ve made from that month’s Spice Club Takeaway Kits. Attendees will have first dibs on the next month’s kits!

September: Feeling Canada in a Mexican Heart

Speaker: Saraí Arroyo | Country: Mexico | Spice: Cinnamon

Unexpectedly, the offer of “the Canadian dream” arrived as a Christmas present. Saraí and her family decided to risk their stability in Mexico and take the opportunity to live in Canada.

Since Saraí became a full-time mother, she’s believed that there is no better place than Peterborough to see her children grow up. She and her family have managed to overcome the intrinsic adversities of migration. Saraí considers it important to help new immigrants which is why she is sharing her experiences with us. Saraí is a woman who seeks to merge her Mexican culture with Canadian culture and teach her children to get the best of both.

Themes: Family, Motherhood, Language, Community
