International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: Taking Action for a More Inclusive Future

March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a global call to address racism, discrimination, and systemic inequities. Established by the United Nations, this day commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa, where peaceful protesters opposing apartheid were met with violence. Today, it serves as a reminder that racial discrimination continues to exist worldwide, including in Canada.

Racism in Canada: The Work That Still Needs to Be Done
While Canada is often seen as a multicultural society, racial discrimination still affects many communities, particularly:
- Black, Indigenous, and racialized individuals
- Immigrants and refugees
- Religious and ethnic minorities
These groups continue to face barriers such as:
- Workplace discrimination and employment inequities
- Racial profiling and over-policing
- Limited access to housing and healthcare
- Hate crimes and racial violence
How Can We Challenge Racism?
At the New Canadians Centre (NCC), we believe in fostering an inclusive community where newcomers feel welcome, valued, and supported. Through education and action, we can work toward dismantling systemic racism and building stronger communities.
One of the ways we do this is through our Community Training Program (CTP), which provides learning opportunities on anti-racism, equity, and inclusion for organizations, workplaces, and community groups. By engaging in these conversations, we can create more inclusive spaces for everyone.
