International Women’s Day: Advancing Equality and Peace

March 8 marks International Women’s Day (IWD) and the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. It is a time to recognize the achievements of women around the world, reflect on the ongoing struggle for gender equality, and commit to building a more inclusive and just society.

Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in Canada
While progress has been made, women—particularly those from marginalized communities, including newcomers, racialized women, and Indigenous women—continue to face barriers such as:
- Wage gaps and employment discrimination
- Gender-based violence
- Unequal representation in leadership roles
- Challenges in accessing support services
Newcomer Women & The Role of the New Canadians Centre
At the New Canadians Centre, we recognize the unique experiences of immigrant and refugee women as they build new lives in Canada. Many face additional challenges such as:
- Navigating a new culture and workforce
- Balancing caregiving responsibilities
- Limited access to community support networks
Through our programs and partnerships, we support newcomer women by:
- Providing employment support and training opportunities
- Offering community training workshops to promote gender equality and inclusion
- Creating safe spaces for women to connect, share, and empower one another
