Newcomer Kitchen Peterborough finds success at VegFest 2018

The Newcomer Kitchen Peterborough ran a successful food vendor booth on September 16th at the second annual VegFest. This event concluded the group’s nearly year-long training with the New Canadians Centre and the Nourish Project, that included: team building, recipe development, kitchen numeracy, nutrition, culinary management, and event planning skills. The group will now begin to build and promote their catering business independently, with support from us as needed. Follow them on Facebook as they plan a fundraising dinner in October to help support their purchase of much needed equipment. The group will also be featured soon at upcoming local events.

Sewing for Beginners

This September, a new set of Sewing for Beginners classes were launched at the New Canadians Centre. These classes offer a twist on the Sewing Collective model by continuing to support newcomer women with sewing and English language skills in a welcoming environment, but for a limited number of sessions. Upon completing their training, participants and other newcomers will then be invited to register for other related workshops in order to help build on and expand their skills sets. Our registration for the alterations workshops is now open! These sessions will run during the second half of the month of October. To register, please contact Reem Ali at [email protected] or call the New Canadians Centre.
