Volunteer Spotlight: Cristina Tamburello
Meet Cristina Tamburello! Our October Volunteer Spotlight!
Volunteer Role/Position(s): English Support Volunteer (Conversation Circles).
Volunteering Since: I started my volunteer experience in May 2025 after attending the Northumberland Winter Celebration in December where I fell in love with the idea of helping new immigrants learn the English language.
Languages: English/Italian.
– Why do you love volunteering at our Centre?
“With my husband being an Italian immigrant, he experienced the struggles of learning a new language along with the difficulties of having to find a job in a new country. I am also the daughter of immigrant parents, so I understand the importance of learning the language of the country that you live in and love being part of this experience at NCC Northumberland through the Wednesday night English Conversation Circle in Cobourg.”
– What is one thing you have learned by volunteering with newcomers?
“I have been meeting so many wonderful students from different countries with different levels of English. This is such a wonderful experience because it’s not only giving back to the community but also receiving back because I get to learn from each of my students about their country of origin. I am so fortunate because I have such a fantastic group where we learn while we have fun. Every time we meet, it is amazing to see the improvement that they make week after week. I wish each of them the best and that one day, they will be sitting where I am sitting and helping future immigrants.”
– What do you like to do when you are not volunteering?
“I love to cook and read and all things animals!”
