Through this experience, I have learned that volunteer work is essential to contributing to the community in which we live. Sometimes we are so busy with our daily responsibilities that we forget that we are part of a community that we build together. For me, being able to share what I have learned through my own experience as a migrant and as part of the LGBTIQ community has been very meaningful. Feeling that you belong somewhere and that there is a place where you can go to speak your language and receive support is something that changes your life when you emigrate. You feel less alone and it also gives you the confidence to face the difficulties of migrating, while helping others to do so. I am deeply grateful to the New Canadians Centre. I have witnessed, and been part of, the transformative impact they have on people’s lives, including my own.
