At the New Canadians Centre, our volunteers make an incredible impact every day. This month, we’re excited to feature Sid Vasudeva, a dedicated volunteer whose kindness, energy, and passion have enriched our community since 2021.

Why do you love volunteering at our Centre?
“I love volunteering at NCC for various reasons. It’s a very welcoming, respectful and super-friendly environment. I have forged friendships and met awesome people and they always treat me like family. The staff is incredible and always there to help. Meeting with people from different parts of the world (playing chess with them) and listening to their stories is always very refreshing.”

What is one thing you have learned by volunteering with newcomers?
“I learned while volunteering with the newcomers to be a more patient, active listener and appreciate little things in life. I learned that no matter how life throws challenges at us, if I am resilient and disciplined, I can overcome those. I learned to be thankful for what I have in life and be humble. I learned here about the potential of every individual to bring joy to others through baby steps and small activities that can make changes in lives even for a short time. This joy is something that we all need as we are passing through difficulties.”

What do you like to do when you are not volunteering?
“I like travelling a little bit, playing chess and reading. I like to go out with friends sometimes and try different restaurants and different cuisines. I also like to be involved in community building things like First Friday and art space.”
