Now recruiting new participants for The Sewing Collective Program
The Sewing Collective is a training program supported by the New Canadians Centre that focuses on empowering newcomer women with sewing skills and English language skills in order to provide them with options that can support their future employment. Created in April 2017, the participants have now completed their training and we are now recruiting new participants for the program.
Following a new program structure, the training will focus on providing sewing skills for beginners over a 4 to 8-week period, starting this August. 32 hours of training will include learning how to use a sewing machine safely; practicing sewing basics; and improving English language skills.
Are you interested in learning how to sew while improving your English language skills?
Interested newcomers are encouraged to contact Reem Ali at the NCC to register: [email protected] or 705-743-0882.
Space is limited. Child minding can be provided on site upon request.

Our current members of the Sewing Collective have graduated from the training and recently featured their products for sale at this year’s Multicultural Canada Day Festival. This year the group expanded on some of its existing lines of products, such as harvesting and egg-gathering aprons; cozies for pots, cups, bowls, and casseroles; and reusable sandwich wrappers, bowl covers, and popcorn bags. Seasonal items included beach wear, canvas totes, and children’s summer-themed bags. The group was also featured at the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market in July, and will be returning to the same venue again before the summer’s end. A selection of their products is currently available for sale at Kawartha Local Marketplace and Green Up.
