Our Neighbourhood
"Our Neighbourhood" delves into the unique stories and journeys of newcomers, shedding light on their varied experiences. At the heart of them all is the search for belonging and the success that can be achieved through community – and a good neighbourly welcome.
What does it mean to be a good neighbour, to welcome people who are new to Canada, and to build a more diverse and just society for everyone?
Children's Book
Building A Home is inspired by the candid accounts and beautiful artwork shared by six children from Syria, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and Pakistan who are now living, playing, and going to school in Nogojiwanong-Peterborough.
Building A Home was commissioned by the New Canadians Centre and written and illustrated by Casandra Lee.

Young Leaders Council
The New Canadians Centre Young Leaders (NCCYL) is a Youth Leadership Council that seeks to empower youth in high school who have newcomer experience. The NCCYL offers youth a platform where they can discuss the issues that affect newcomer youth and explore their own stories while building leadership skills.
Each year, the NCCYL recruits new members who served on the council for the duration of the school year from September to June.
Newcomer Leadership Group
The Newcomer Leadership Group is an 8-week leadership training program that supports newcomers in developing their capacity and confidence to engage in the community.
The Newcomer Leadership Group seeks to:
- provide support to newcomers who are looking to engage as volunteers and participate in decision-making processes in the Peterborough community, and
- expand the capacity for community organisations to include and integrate diverse perspectives in their practice.
Newcomer Radio Group
The Newcomer Radio Group supports newcomers in Peterborough with skills and opportunities to tell their stories on their own terms via radio/audio production. In doing so, we hope to help diversify voices and perspectives in local media and arts.
Participants are offered 6-weeks of training in storytelling and audio/radio production and an opportunity to share their stories on-air and through a podcast.
