Volunteer Spotlight – Ivet Reyes Maturano

Meet Ivet Reyes Maturano!

Volunteer Role/Position(s): Administrative Volunteer and Special Events Volunteer.
Volunteering Since: 2023.
Languages: English & Spanish.
– Why do you love volunteering at our Centre?
“As a migrant myself, volunteering at NCC has helped me to feel grounded in Peterborough, and to rediscover and put at work my own professional interests and skills. For example, it was through NCC that I was able to become a community interpreter using my language skills. And being a community interpreter has allowed me to nourish my own love for bridging communication among people and cultures. Furthermore, I am glad to support NCC’s work which, I believe, is ever more relevant amidst a complex context that tends to overshadow the humanity of newcomers, and the socioeconomic vitality that we bring to places.”
– What is one thing you have learned by volunteering with newcomers?
“The very first event where I volunteered at NCC was at the Nowruz/Spring celebration, which I did not know about before. And as I helped and enjoyed the celebration, I was able to enjoy the foods and dancing to the music from various places in the world that celebrate such a holiday in Peterborough.”
– What do you like to do when you are not volunteering?
“I am loving my new job at the Peterborough library. Also, I very much like dancing, reading, and, as a mother of two wonderful young and very active kids, my appreciation for sleeping has grown exponentially.”
