April Showers bring May flowers and vegetables!

We had a very long winter, especially with the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.  As spring approached we wanted to find a way to reach out to our clients with a spirit of community and new growth.

At the beginning of April, NCC volunteers put together and delivered Seed Planting Kits to 20 newcomer families in Peterborough and Cobourg.  These kits included soil, paper planters and a variety of seeds along with some activity sheets for children to learn how to plant and to watch their seedlings grow.  Two weeks later, NCC hosted Jill Bishop from NOURISH who held an online workshop on gardening and planting – 29 clients, including some who received the seed kits, attended the session.

One client shared, “Thanks so much for the seeds. The kit is really good. Since last spring my kids are planting seeds, this time they are so happy to use the pots that you sent.”

We look forward to seeing the “fruits” of this project later this summer!

Special thanks to volunteers Helene Lowry, Sally Anne Morse and Robert Mout for preparing, packing and delivering the kits; members of the Peterborough Horticultural Society/Seedy Sunday for donating seeds; ENACTUS-Fleming College Paper Planet Project for the paper planter kits; and NOURISH for the gardening workshop.
