New Canadians Centre Assumes Ownership of Historic St. James United Church Building

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Peterborough, ON – April 14, 2025

The New Canadians Centre (NCC) and St. James United Church are pleased to announce that NCC has officially assumed ownership of the historic building at 221 Romaine Street, known as St. James United Church.

Since relocating from Sherbrooke Street in 2012, NCC has occupied the top floor of 221 Romaine Street. Over the past 12 years, NCC has significantly expanded its operations, welcoming thousands of newcomers and hosting numerous cultural celebrations, shared meals, and community events.

Andy Cragg, Executive Director of NCC, reflects on the significance of this space:

“221 Romaine Street has become a place where newcomers find the support and strength to launch their new lives in Canada. It is a place where lifelong friendships are forged.”

Constructed in 1917, St. James United Church has served as a cornerstone of the Christian community for over a century, dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming space for all, and giving back to the broader community. The congregation, along with the St. James Players community theatre group, will continue to use the building as tenants of NCC. “As NCC steps into ownership, we do so with a profound sense of commitment and pride,” Cragg continues. “We aim to preserve the legacy of this space and ensure it remains a beacon of hope and a hub for community connection.”

Although NCC is not a religious-based organization, it shares many values with St. James United Church, including a vision for a diverse and inclusive community. Julie van Haaften, Minister of St. James United Church, expresses her sentiments:

“It means a great deal to us to have a community organization that respects and loves the building as we do. The New Canadians Centre has been an exceptional tenant and partner over the past 12 years.”

NCC will manage rental opportunities for various spaces within the building, including the gym, Wesley Hall (a performance venue with a capacity of 350), and other meeting areas.

Through NCC, newcomers can access a wide range of programs and services, such as settlement and employment counselling, language assessments, workshops (e.g., taxes and citizenship), English conversation and women’s groups, skills training, youth programming, and recreational outings. NCC also plays an active role in community development and is a founding member of the Peterborough Immigration Partnership.
