Welcoming Week 2022
Welcoming Week is an annual opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people, places and values that help everyone feel welcome and that they belong in their local community, no matter where they come from.
This year’s Welcoming Week takes place from September 9 to 18. It marks the 10th anniversary of what is now a global event, and Canada’s third year participating nationally. This is the first time that Peterborough is participating!
We are located on the Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations, which include: Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations.
We respectfully acknowledge that the Williams Treaties First Nations are the stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come.
Welcoming Week Peterborough 2022 - Schedule
Friday Sept 9 & Saturday Sept 10: Digital Dervish + Flamenco Sonic
Digital Dervish + Flamenco Sonic is a story about a dervish who is in a dream and wakes up to birds and the sounds of nature- he begins to meditate and perform his sema. He becomes enveloped in a storm of chaos as he whirls wildly and then collapses where he becomes dormant again. A Flamenco dancer notices and begins to move in similar patterns attempting to awaken him. They exchange their sounds and movements until they become intertwined in whirling. This is a story about landscape, earth, love and life that encompasses music, imagery and physical movement.

Sunday September 11: Afro-Centric Celebration
A celebration of Black heritage and culture. African drumming workshop, African drumming performance, African-themed crafts for ages 8 - 98, and an Afrocentric mini market

Monday September 12: Bedtime Family Favourites
Wind down from your busy day with bedtime stories, a poem, a song or two, and a simple Welcome craft your family can work on together.

Wednesday September 14: "One Night in Havana" Community Dance & Picnic
Pablo Terry and his band Sol de Cuba will provide live entertainment at Millennium Park for this community dance and picnic. Born in Cuba, Pablo received his musical training in the Cuban Army and at the renowned Escuela de Artes in Havana.
Please bring a lawn chair or blanket and a picnic dinner (and your dancing shoes!) so you can enjoy the music and dance the evening away!

Friday September 16: International Student Fireside Welcome
This event is open to international students at Trent University and Fleming College (limited attendance). Please contact Trent and Fleming International to register.
There will be games, live music and food all provided at no charge for students registered in advance at Trent/Fleming.

How: Meet at Trent East Bank bus stop for rides to event.

- Vegetarian, and chicken hotdogs, chips, soft drinks and sweets will be provided
- Event will run until dusk (8:00 – 8:30) and students will be transported to bus stop if requested. A short walk back to the bus stop is also possible
- In the event of rain, you will be notified of cancellation by email by noon (12:00) p.m. on the day of the event
September 16-25: Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week
Peterborough Pride has become a cornerstone annual week of events for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.
Peterborough Pride exists to support & celebrate people of all sexual orientations and gender identities*; honour and give thanks to those who have come before us and contribute to the resilient spirit and courage of the present struggle for our human rights.
We promote a justice seeking future through education and advocacy so that all may participate fully in the life and work of the City of Peterborough and surrounding area with safety, dignity & respect!

Sunday September 18: Trip to Curve Lake Pow Wow
Pow Wows are gatherings that honour Indigenous culture. It is an annual event to celebrate the renewal of life, old friendships, and forming new ones.
Attend the annual Curve Lake Pow Wow - enjoy browsing the many craft vendors, taste the delicious traditional foods, celebrate traditional dancing, singing, and drumming.
