“My name is Bruce Lindsay, and I have been a volunteer with the NCC since June 2022, after earning my Ontario English Language Teaching certification. Each week, I teach English online to the Beginner class and assist at special events or whenever extra help is needed. Many students affectionately call me Mr. Bruce.”

Why do you love volunteering at our Centre?
“I love volunteering at NCC because it provides valuable teaching experience with adults. While in school, I realized that gaining experience was essential for finding a job. I began by helping Janet Hunter, the long-time English teacher at NCC, in her class. When Janet retired, I applied to become a volunteer and met NCC’s staff, who recognized my passion for teaching and entrusted me with the Beginner class.”
What is one thing you have learned by volunteering with newcomers?
“Volunteering at NCC has opened doors to teaching positions at Fleming College, Trent University, and the Durham Catholic District School Board. My enthusiasm for teaching newcomers also inspired me to pursue a Master’s in Adult Education, which I expect to complete in 2026. Recently, I learned that students need to be more connected so I started a WhatsApp group to chat and share lesson notes, which has been well-received.”
What do you like to do when you are not volunteering?
“In addition to teaching, I’m passionate about outdoor education. During the summer, I run Paddling Fun, a business where I teach canoeing and kayaking and lead canoe trips. I also own a Voyageur canoe that seats 10 people, which I’ve used with various groups. I hope to organize a day for NCC participants to try paddling, though some students are hesitant due to fear of water. Perhaps someone reading this will join me at an event in 2025!”
