PIP News – August 2018
A recap of the Peterborough Immigration Partnership’s work in the month of August 2018
PIP in Action: Newcomer Kitchen Peterborough hosts lunch delivery at Peterborough Public Health
Over the last 2 months, Newcomer Kitchen Peterborough has been receiving business-integrated training with the help of the Nourish Project. This included learning about recipe scaling, pricing and budgeting, whole sale shopping and packaging, and receiving and delivering lunch and catering orders. To help put their learning into practice, Newcomer Kitchen Peterborough held a lunch delivery at Peterborough Public Health, where staff were given the opportunity to place their lunch orders on August 20th, and pick them up from Myrtle’s Kitchen in the Public Health Building by the week’s end. A big thank you to Peterborough Public Health’s social committee and staff, and to Amanda Harrison from the Nourish Project for helping support the group’s first successful attempt at delivering orders.
Check out the group’s vendor booth at Peterborough VegFest on Sunday September 16th at Millennium Park. Menu items will include hummus; baba ghanouj; gluten-free tabouli; okra stew; eggplant stew; and freshly baked pita bread.

PIP Feature: Culinary Skills Training for Youth
During the month of August, 8 newcomer youth received 32 hours of culinary skills training through the New Canadians Centre, in partnership with the Nourish Project. The training sessions were held at Myrtle’s Kitchen in Peterborough Public Health, where youth gained experience in: opening and closing a kitchen, dish washing, proper knife skills, kitchen and food safety, and using different serving styles, among many other skills. The youth showed off their new skills during mock job interviews that were held on their last day of training, and cooked and served lunch to their invited guests. Four events will be held for the youth as follow up to this training: a food handlers course (September 22nd); a training session on protection against harassment at work and understanding labor rights (September 28th); a community dinner where they will cook and serve as volunteers (October 25th); and a trip to Fleming College’s Culinary Program (TBD). A special thank you to Chefs Elaine and Peter McCarthy for conducting the youth’s mock interviews.
Established in 2008, the Peterborough Immigration Partnership (PIP) is a community-based partnership of individuals & organisations (including the NCC) which envisions a community where the meaningful economic, social and cultural integration of newcomers ensures a prosperous and inclusive community for all.
